Sale of the Week: Buhl Collection Photos at Tajan

On November 19, as part of its series of photographs sales, Parisian auction house Tajan will offer a selection of works from the esteemed collection of Henry Buhl, who since 1993 has focused his acquisition efforts around the theme of hands, with works by masters like Robert Mapplethorpe, Philip Lorca di Corcia, Arman and Jack Pierson. The Tajan sale will offer more than 350 works and is expected to realize €750,000 to €1 million ($1 million to $1.3 million).

Among the expected highlights is a group of six black and white prints entitled “Bottle Bar” (1973) by the British artist duo Gilbert & George, estimated at €50,000 to €70,000 ($67,000 to $94,000). Andreas Feininger’s print “The Photojournalist” (1955), printed in 1992, is expected to sell for €6,000 to €8,000 ($8,000 to $10,700), and Erwin Blumenfeld’s eerie shot “Skull with Charley Toorop Hands” (1932-1935) is estimated at €3,000 to €5,000 ($4,000 to $6,700).

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Buhl Foundation, which is devoted to support and reintegrations of homeless people. The Buhl collection has been exhibited worldwide in the last ten years, including at the Guggenheim Museum in New York and at venues in China, Germany, Russia, Korea, and Taiwan.
